Sunflower: Botanical Series

Sunflower: Botanical Series is the third, and possibly, final addition to this particular series. I have spent considerable time in the study of three types of raw edge applique'. The challenge of this particular system is working improvasationally. That is, to compose as you go. However, this may be my strength, as I found it to be intuitive. The next challenge is the enormous quantity of thread involved in the process. The reward is an impressionistic style of unity and blending of fabrics. I would like to give credit to Candace Kenyon Dove for her development of this style and for sharing her talents with her classes.

  1. Judy, this is a lovely piece. I'd say keep going- make them "abstract" pieces? Just go with shape and colour. Raw edge applique is a great technique. You could add stitches, beads, fabric collage...? Love it. This technique is great for "freeing up", and just "letting rip". Well done.

  2. Judy these pieces are looking really lovely. You sew as you paint! your arrangements are beautiful. The raw edge technique is the one I use about 90% of the time in my work. Don't be afraid to use strong colours - they can look so effective just as in your "Hidden Garden". You have only just begun to show how much talent lies beneath those hard working hands. Take care!

  4. Judy, I love your latest pieces. And thanks for your suggestions about fixing my quilt. You're right on as far as my not being happy with the square in the center, but I didn't realize it until you pointed it out. I will let you know how it turns out.

  6. I'm fascinated by this quite individual look and finish. It's beautiful and if you say it's improvisational then i say - 'carry on improvising' It's great!
